just starting out [Mar. 9th, 2009|03:55 pm]

I'm just starting out in FoW and I have a few questions and need some advice.

Assault confuses me!!

I built a bunch of Shermans over the weekend and primed them with GW Chaos Black primer and then tried to airbrush them, but was very disappointed...
First off, my airbrush experiences is slightly more than NONE!
I have a Badger single action airbrush running off canned air.
I was using Tamiya acrylic thinned with Windex
Problem #1 - I over thinned the paint
Problem #2 - I it looks like I got dust on the primer or in the first layer of base coat

I stripped the models using a concentrated Simple Green-like degreaser a friend gets from work, but I think either the Windex or degreaser "etched" the surface on some of the resin pieces.
I re-primed things this morning, but I'm afraid to retry the airbrush...

Does anyone have any advice for a mediocre 40K painter?

For Germans, I have a Panzergrenadier platoon with half-tracks and staff cars, , a pair of cannons, a few (4?) Stug G's and a King Tiger.
For Americans, I have 8 Shermans, a Lee, a halftrack, a howitzer squad, a rifle company in box and a pair of jeeps with trailers.

I'd like to start playing using the missions in the Open Fire set and a "Kelly's Heros" mission I found online that pits 5 Shermans against a King Tiger in a village...

Does anyone have any other baby step missions they could suggest??

Air Power? Anybody Use Aircraft in Their Armies? [Feb. 27th, 2007|03:45 pm]

Lately I've been doing a survey of the 1/144th scale aircraft toys/models available, and how useful they'd be for Flames of War. I still haven't gotten the actual rules, so I don't know how to stat out planes, but I can give PLENTY of advice. As you can tell from my handle, I've been a lifetime aviation enthusiast, and know my planes.

I'm almost at the point where my Late War Brits will be complete and so I'm thinking of choosing one of my various other armies to complete.

You can see the poll here: Which Army?

These are indispensable references for anyone looking at painting Brit vehicles during WW2. If there is one set of references you should get, these are them.

Trying to generate some traffic here, what's happening with Flames of War for you personally?

For me I'm still working on various armies - the late war Brits are almost complete, while my early war BEF infantry are also close to being finished. Everything else in still in boxes waiting their turn at the painting desk. I've just been asked to find out all about the vehicles used at Arnhem by the Germans for a friend so that's going to be my mauin research project for the next few weeks. Festung Europa is out in 10 days time which is just after I leave for two weeks holiday dammint, so I'll be unable to pick up my copy until then.

About time you say?

Here are some photos:
The first is a pic of three Churchills. Like I mentioned, I haven't weathered or detailed them yet, they're still very much works in progress. I'm rather pleased with the look especially as they fit in with the rest of the army now, but they still need some tidying up and touching up in areas like the towropes plus of course markings.

Three Churchills

The next pic is of all four Churchills including the natty CS version with the 95mm Howitzer. I've still to add all the extra track links etc and redo the trackwork.

Four Churchills in Echelon

The final picture is the current state of my Late War Brits. There're a few more on the painting desk waiting to be finished (vis the various posts) and the rebasing is still a week away but for now that's pretty much it, with two platoons of infantry expanding to three after basing plus a Mortar platoon. I haven't done the Carrier Patrols as yet, as they need significant work and some special basing techniques.

Current state of Brits

I'd note that the Cromwells are still around at Evan's. embarassed look

Wednesday 30th August

A late start - sleeping pills kicked with a vengeance - meant that I wasted the entire morning before travelling over to the new place to get the gas turned on, something that I had to sit around and wait for until 4:30pm! At least the move tomorrow will go ahead, but I only managed to make a little progress with the last lot of figures - basecoat, helmets and blacklined webbing was the state of play by the end of the night. Evan will want his painting bench back tomorrow (he's been very patient and generous with his work space) so that's the end for this lot of infantry until at least next week at the earliest. The funny thing is that these are all the prone figures - a bren team and three (3) PIAT teams plus a few standard riflemen to fill out the remaining bases. Once I've done these, I'll glue them all to the bases and get stuck into the Mortar Platoon. I might see if I can scrounge some more late war brits from my last source - but that'll take a little bit of work given that I only found these by looking closely. I'm really pleased that I've got so far with the army since effectively the 14th August.

I'm actually rather pleased with myself right now - I've proved that I can still paint to a fairly high standard, my confidence at completing tasks is back and I don't fear picking up a paintbrush anymore - I do however have a very high reagrd for painting in managable quantities which is why I doubt I'll try and finish my ancients and ACW armies in short order. I'll leave them until I get a decent palette of Vallejo Model and Game Colors so I can get the correct tonal qualities.

Tuesday 29th August

Finished off yesterday's twelve figures with a minimum of trouble although I was trying to get the move into the new place organised which effectively took most of the day away from the painting bench as I was not really mentally up to painting for very long at a time. I did manage to get the remainder of the figures undercoated (leaving just the 3 inch Mortar platoon to be sorted out ready for undercoating).

Given that I'm moving into the new place tomorrow I really needed to get everything finished tonight but I just wasn't able to. I'm a tad worried that if I don't get these infantry done now, I'll lose my impetus until such time as I have a painting setup ready at the new place, which means I need to get some dowelling and some wood blocks ready. I'll also need to grab some decent lengths of 2" square section balsa for the mass undercoating. So it may be some time before I get another chance.
